Your county government and school boards

New Jersey has 21 counties, each run by an elected Board of County Commissioners, and 564 municipalities. Much of day-to-day local government, from police and zoning to local property taxes, is handled by your town, so the municipal council or township committee matters as much as the county board.

The New Jersey Legislature

The 2027 session runs from Tuesday, January 12, 2027 to Tuesday, January 11, 2028.

Anyone can testify at a Senate or Assembly committee meeting on a bill. At the meeting, fill out a testimony slip with your name, any organization, the bill number, your position and whether you want to speak, and hand it to the committee aide with copies of any written statement. You can also send written testimony to the committee aide, listed on each committee's page. Testimony is a public record and may be posted online.
